2017 Regional Conference

Earlier this month, the UWaterloo IISE Chapter and 31 delegates made the long trek out to Halifax, Nova Scotia for the 2017 IISE Regional Conference. Over the three day event, host Dalhousie University packed in all sorts of fun, education, training, and competitive activities not to mention sprinkling in some of their maritime culture.

While Université Du Québec À Trois-Rivières went on to win the coveted Golden I Trophy, Waterloo faired well in competitions. Our simulation team comprised of fourth year students (Christian Gould, Kevin Chu and Srikajan Santhirakumaran) managed to bring home third in the Simulation Competition hosted by Simwell. Waterloo’s Vince Magas also followed up with third place in the Technical Paper Competition. Additionally many of our delegates competed in the increasingly popular scavenger hunt that feature all sorts of challenges and activities to network and sightsee with other attendees and local attractions.

This year marked the 37th annual regional conference, and it is quite clear just how successful the Canadian IISE region has become. Scott Mason, Senior VP on the IISE Board of Trustees, went as far as to say that is was the best regional IISE conference that he had ever attended. Overall attendance was down slightly from last year but there was no shortage of festivities. The highlight of the weekend, no surprise, was the Wine and Cheese event. Dalhousie added their own unique flare with a maritime feel at the venue, Murphy’s the Cable Wharf located right on the harbourfront.

As for next year, the University of Windsor has big shoes to fill as they host in January of 2018.
